Responsible Consumption and Production
As a food company, it has been natural for us at Kohberg to work with a special focus on SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. A focus that today is an integral part of our entire value chain - from the ingredients sprouting in the field to the finished bread being bought by our customers.
This commits us to avoiding pollutants and ensuring the least possible impact on the climate and environment throughout our production. We are dedicated to reducing waste, and in 2022, we have optimised our packaging to use as little plastic as possible through a targeted effort. At the same time, we continue to work to ensure that all the plastic we use in our packaging is recyclable.
Environmentally friendly consumption
It is important we focus on optimising our processes and minimising waste at all stages throughout our entire value chain – from the ingredients being grown in the field to the finished bread being delivered to our customers.
Waste from Kohberg is approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration for use as animal feed. We therefore collaborate with local farmers who collect our surplus products for use as feed, ensuring that they are included in a circular system. In this way, we prevent them from becoming food waste.
Reduced Energy Consumption
In 2025, we purchased guarantees of origin from Danish wind turbines and solar panels to cover 100% of our electricity consumption. We aim to contribute to the generation of renewable energy equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by Kohberg.
Sustainability is an integrated part of our business, and we continuously work to identify and implement more sustainable solutions. Our ambition is to make responsible choices that both support the green transition and meet the increasing expectations of our customers, consumers, and business partners. We closely monitor developments within sustainability and continuously adapt our efforts in line with new legislation, market expectations, and technological opportunities.
Kohberg and the environment
At Kohberg, we bake in large ovens and for many hours at a time. Therefore, it is crucial that we utilise the energy most efficiently for the sake of the environment. When we at Kohberg bake a lot of bread and pastries every day, we cannot avoid consuming lots of energy in the form of electricity, water and heat. We are aware of this, which is why we are continuously working on reducing our consumption. Our large-scale production does, however, also have some advantages for the energy consumption and thus the environment - especially if you compare it to the fact that the same amount of bread had to be baked one by one at home in kitchens.
Recyclable plastic
As a food company, we consider factors such as food safety, food waste and storage when choosing packaging. And even though it is a vilified material, plastic packaging is still the best solution to avoid food waste for our customers and consumers. The plastic packaging weighs very little, reducing the environmental impact of transport.
Most of our plastic packaging is made from recyclable plastics and we are working hard to get recyclable packaging for all our products.
